Take It From Bob: Design in the Movement

Last night I watched the Dancing With the Stars premiere and couldn’t help but be a little underwhelmed by the costumes in the opening number, even though I was excited for the show to be back.
The looks aren’t baaaad, but just imagine if Bob Mackie had designed these. There is SO much potential.
It was a passing comment. One of probably 1,000 fashion comments I have in the course of a day.
I didn’t know then that Bob Mackie had passed away the night before.
To me, Bob Mackie is showstopping design. He is Cher. He is Tina Turner. He is Carol Burnett. He is a sketch come to life, with flashes of color AND flashes of light. Long lines. Killer silhouettes. But most importantly: new ideas.
He was a titan of new ideas.
And as a creative and expressive person, I am so grateful to live in a world that got to share in his creations.
Today I watched some clips of his interviews and was struck by something he said. He talked about beginning his designs by watching how a woman moved her body. How she used it. The shapes it made.
For me, it was one of those moments when the truth hits and the world stops.
Let me explain.
I have seen hundreds of women walk out of fitting rooms unsure if they love or hate what they’re wearing, then stand with their arms straight at their sides like a soldier and scrutinize every thread of fabric on their skin.
And to be honest, I did the same thing at first.
But years ago I realized something, and I started sharing it with other women:
Do not stand like a soldier and stare at yourself in the mirror.
Walk.
Watch yourself.
Put your hand on your hip. Turn. Reach for something. Move the way you move when you are actually out in the world and see what the garment does.
Does it dance with you?
Does it leave a trail?
The right layer can follow you from one moment to the next.
Because in life, we move.
My fingers are typing on this keyboard as I readjust my posture in my seat. I get up to board a flight. I walk to my car. I run for a train. Yes, I sit. And yes, there are moments when I simply stand.
But so much of life happens in the movement.
And designers who love women make clothing for the movement of a woman. For the shapes her body makes as she lives her life. For the feeling of those fibers against her skin while she does it.
That is something I have believed for a long time.
I just didn’t know Bob Mackie had been saying it, too.
